Afterschool Community Learning Labs
At Afterschool Learning Lab model demonstration sites in New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey, exemplary afterschool programs are showcased in a school-based setting. Providing young people a diverse menu of programming that responds directly to their needs, the labs also serve as a venue where representatives from schools, community-based organizations, foundations, and government can observe innovative youth development programming in action.
PASE opened its first Community Learning Lab in 1999 and now serves over 125 young people at two sites: MS 378 in Red Hook, Brooklyn (which is comprised of three schools - The Brooklyn School of Collaborative Studies, The Brooklyn New School and The Carroll Gardens Community School) and Hoboken Charter School in Hoboken, New Jersey.
At these demonstration sites, exemplary practitioners (selected through a competitive, citywide Request for Proposals process) are invited to showcase their most effective programs The Learning Lab bridges the gap between the school day and the afterschool program, providing young people ages 9 - 14 with academic and cultural enrichment activities. In addition, the Lab serves as a professional development venue where representatives from schools, community-based organizations, foundations, and government can observe creative and innovative youth development programming in action and discuss promising practices.
On a national level, PASE launched Learning Labs in Chattanooga, TN and Atlanta, GA and continues to participate in partnerships with the Public Education Foundation at Chattanooga PASE and Atlanta PASE and Spellman College in Atlanta.
Funders: Annenberg Foundation, UBS Investment Bank, FleetBoston Financial Foundation, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New York State Department of Education, Mercedes-Benz USA, Twin Chimney, Inc. and The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.
