For families everywhere, afterschool is not optional. Out-of-school time learning is not a luxury. Whether providing safe space while a parent works, enabling academic success through activities linked to school-day learning, or developing critical 21 st century skills through the arts, sports, and more, afterschool programs are an essential part of the education equation:
SCHOOL + AFTERSCHOOL = EDUCATION
PASE is here to ensure that the afterschool part of that equation is of high quality and is available to all youth. This edition of the PASE Bulletin is full of information designed to be useful for practitioners; we hope that it will serve as a valuable resource for afterschool program staff of all levels.
Best regards,
Dr. Shelly Wimpfheimer, LMSW
PASE Executive Director

In this edition of the Bulletin, PASE is introducing a new regular feature. From time to time, interviews with PASE staff and other experts in the field will focus on a topic important to out-of-school time and provide information and guidance that will be useful to you as a practitioner.
In this issue, PASE’s Associate Director of Regional and National Programs, Ellen O’Connell, and Program Director, Shelly Wilson, sit down to discuss effective practices for summer programs. Together, Ms. O’Connell and Ms. Wilson have over 25 years of youth development experience and oversee PASE’s Summer Learning initiative which has helped youth-serving organizations implement effective summer programs for eight years running.
In this interview, they discuss the difference between summer and school-year programs, staffing summer programs, balancing fun and enrichment in the summer, things to look out for when planning, and good resources for the summer.
